“City Hall New York” Transferware Plate
Staffordshire transferware plate by John and William Ridgway, circa 1825.
Dimensions: Approximately 9⅞” diameter.
Decoration:
The border has a floral pattern used by Ridgway in their “Beauties of America” series.
The center is an image of New York City’s city hall.
The reverse bears a printed label.
This building was completed in 1812 and still stands today. It is the third to be called City Hall.
The image for this design was likely taken from an 1817 print by Charles Augustin Busby.
Views of City Hall were produced by numerous other manufacturers including Stevenson, Clews, Stubbs, Stevenson, Jackson, and Meigh.
