Edo Period Arita Charger - Scene Through a Window

Underglaze blue Japanese export porcelain charger, c. 1770.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 12½” diameter.

 

Decoration:

The border is decorated with alternating geometric patterns and scenic cartouches.

 

The center is decorated with scene looking through a window and door into a garden with a pine tree and a rock. To the left is a shoji screen.

 

The reverse is decorated with mountain-like designs.

 

The base is encircled by two blue lines, has a single blue line, seven kiln spur marks, and a mark used in the late 18th century.
