French Market Armorial Plate – Marnieres de Guer

Chinese export porcelain plate with molded silver-form body, circa 1765.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 9½” in diameter.

 

Decoration:
The rim is edged with gold, is outlined with a gold band, and bears an ornate armorial with a Marquise’s crown.

 

The center is decorated with a floral bouquet which is surrounded by gilt foliate garlands with pink blossoms.

 

The service is illustrated and discussed in Lebel, “French and Swiss Armorials on Chinese Export Porcelain of the 18th Century”, at page 125.

 

The service appears to have been made for Rene-Jean de Marnieres of Brittany (1735 – 1804). He was known as the Marquis de Guer and Vicomte de Rennes. He was a conseiller of the Parlement of Brittany and later served there as president a mortier or senior presiding judge.

 

Condition: Wear to gilding, glaze pop; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
