1 000,00$Prix

Underglaze blue Chinese export porcelain plate, c. 1730.

Dimensions: Approximately 7¾” x diameter.

Decoration:

The border is decorated with a wave pattern design.

The central scene is of a European landscape scene with two figures in a field beneath a tall tree and another person leading an ox. In the background are European building and clouds in the sky.

The reverse is decorated with three sets of blossoms and concentric blue circles.

At one point this scene was thought to be of Deshima Island, the Dutch trading enclave in Nagasaki harbor. However, further research has identified the scene as the Dutch coastal town of Scheveningen, based on design inspired by a Delft model painted by Frederick van Frytom (1652-1702).

Examples are illustrated and discussed in Howard and Ayres, “China For The West”, at pages 72- 73, and Howard, “The Choice of the Private Trader” at page 44.

Japanese and Chinese examples together with original Delft examples are illustrated and discussed by Christiaan Jörg in 'Fine and Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections' at pages 240 - 249.
