Chinese Export Rococo Monogrammed Tea Caddy
Chinese Export porcelain tea caddy, c. 1760.
Dimensions: Approximately 4½” x 3” x 1½”.
Decoration:
Each face of the tea caddy is decorated with an elaborate European rococo cartouche composed of a grisaille and gold shell with a radiant star at the top, a Caduceus below, and feathers or grasses to one side, all above what appear to be clouds or bubbles.Within the cartouche is a gold monogram highlighted in puce.
The sides are decorated with delicate grisaille flower sprays.
The shoulders and the lid are decorated with puce, pink, and gilt rococo scroll borders.
The lid bears a molded gilt fruit-and-leaf finial.
The base is undecorated.
The term “grisaille” derives from the French word gris (gray) and, in art, refers to painting executed in monochromatic tones of gray and white.
Condition: Minor losses of enamels and gilding, glaze flaws, otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
