Japanese export porcelain plate, c. 1825.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 12” diameter.

 

Decoration:

The dish is decorated with a large central medallion surrounded by colorful images.

 

The central medallion bears the image of a Buddhist lion resting its front feet on a Buddhist cash coin symbol instead of the usual ball. Beneath the medallion there is also an image of the Buddhist cash coin symbol tied to the medallion by a ribbon.

 

Surrounding the medallion are vibrant flowers and leaves and a pair of gilded Japanese phoenixes or hoo birds.

 

The reverse is decorated with thin blue band and two sets of alternating blue designs.

 

The base bears a kiln spur and an apocryphal mark and stands on a foot rim encircled with blue bands.
