Pair of Small Chinese Export Platters for the Islamic Market
Chinese export porcelain platters, circa 1880.
Dimensions: Each approximately 11⅝” x 9¾ “.
Decoration:
The rim is edged in gold is decorated with a colorful geometric design typical of those used for the Islamic markets. A discussion of Chinese export porcelain intended for the Islamic market can be found in Chapters XIV and XV of Nadler, “China to Order”.
The center is bordered with a thin green and navy geometric band and is decorated with a large spray of peonies, butterflies, and insects.
The base is unmarked.
Condition: Minor rubbing to gilding and enamels, manufacturing glaze pops, rim frit and underglaze staining to reverse of rim on one platter; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
