Underglaze blue Chinese porcelain dish, c. 1725.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 8½” diameter.

 

Decoration:

The border is decorated with a band of continuous flower blossoms.

 

The cavetto is decorated with a diaper pattern and four cartouches containing auspicious objects.

 

The center is decorated with a scene from the “Romance of the Western Chamber” (“Xixiang Ji”), which tells the story of a secret love affair between Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court.

 

In this scene two women talk in the shade of tree as a man plays an instrument on a table in a pavilion. A child or servant is seated on the floor beneath the table.

 

The reverse is decorated with three blue bands and four images of the sacred fungus.

 

Condition: Minor roughness to the edge, minor glaze flaws; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
