Chinese Export Armorial Plate - Ferguson
Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1750.
Dimensions: Approximately 8⅞” in diameter.
Decoration:
The edge is gilded.
The rim is decorated with floral sprays.
The cavetto is decorated with a spearhead pattern.
The center is decorated with the arms and motto of the Ferguson (sometimes spelled Fergusson) family. Note that the arms bear the mark of a son, in this case in the form a ring.
The reverse is unmarked.
The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1., at p. 448.
Howard notes that the family descended from Fergus Ferguson, who received a charter of the Kilkerran lands from King James III of Scotland in 1466.
