English tin-glazed earthenware plate, circa 1740.
Dimensions: Approximately 9” diameter.
Decoration:
The plate is decorated in a cobalt blue naïve hand-painted design.
The edge is undecorated.
The central design is of a couple in period attire walking in a landscape. There are buildings in the background and sponge decorated foliage.
The reverse is undecorated and bears an old Sotheby’s label.
Condition: There is a hairline in the upper left and glaze fleabites and frits on the rim typical of antique tin-glazed earthenware. Otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
