"Chinese Pastime" Staffordshire Transferware Platter
Blue transferware platter manufactured by Davenport, circa 1835.
Dimensions: Approximately 14½” x 11¾”.
Decoration:
The border is decorated with floral sprays and scrolls.
The central scene is of two Chinese children in an oriental garden. One flies a kite while the other stands nearby under an open parasol with eyes fixed on the flying kite.
The reverse has a printed cartouche in the form of scrolls and Chinese figures surrounding the phrase “Chinese Pastime”, beneath which is the name “Davenport”.
The reverse also bears the impressed Davenport mark.
The source for the design may be Jean Baptiste Pillement’s “Collection of Chinese Children’s Games”.
Condition: Staining on the reverse; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.
