Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1770.
Dimensions: Approximately 9”.
Decoration:
The border is decorated with flower sprays and a bamboo band.
The cavetto is decorated with bands of gold and spearheads.
The center contains the arms of Hay quartering those of Gifford with the motto; “Spare Nought”.
The reverse bears a Cohen & Cohen label.
The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 2, at p. 258.
According to Howard, the service was likely made for Peter (or Patrick) Hay of Alderson who was a Colonel in the East India Company.
Condition: Rim frits; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.
