Pair Chinese Export American Market Pseudo-Armorial Plates

Pair Chinese Export American Market Pseudo-Armorial Plates

$800.00Price

Chinese export famille rose pseudo-armorial deep plates, circa 1790.

Dimensions: Each approximately 9¾” diameter.

The border has a thin blue band with gold stars that is edged in red. The cavetto is rimmed with a green and gold husk chain.

The center has a shield supported by a green and gold ribbon and surrounded by a floral garland. In the center of the shield are a pair of flowers and a leaf.

The reverse is unmarked.

In their book “Chinese Export Porcelain” at p. 118, Madsen & White discuss this type of border as being particularly popular with the American market.

Examples identified to the American market can be found on certain of the services displaying the arms of New York State and other services with identified American connections. See, for example, Howard, “New York and the China Trade”, figs. C29 and C36.

Further, Jean Mudge in her book “Chinese Export Porcelain for the American Trade” notes that pseudo-armorials were popular with American buyers “who did not have a family coat of arms, but who desired the prestige which one might bring.”
