Chinese Export Armorial Plate – Hope of Craighall
Chinese export armorial plate, circa 1795.
The rim is decorated in a blue diaper and spearhead pattern, as is the cavetto.
The center is decorated with a central coat of arms, crest, and motto of the Hope family. Below the arms is the badge of a Baronet.
The supporters are a pair of women holding anchors.
The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain” V.1, at page 716.
The arms, crest, and motto are those of the Hope family. According to Howard, it is likely that this service was made for Sir Thomas Hope.
