Chinese Export Armorial Plate – MacDonald
Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1795.
Dimensions: Approximately 9⅞” in diameter.
The edge is gilded.
The rim is decorated with a black band and a vine of gold black and sepia. At the top of the plate is the MacDonald crest with the motto “Nec Tempore Nec Fato” ("Neither time nor fate").
The center is decorated with the arms of MacDonald accollee (placed side by side) with what appears to be those of Forbes and the motto “Per Mare Per Terras ” (“By Sea By Land”). In English heraldry arms accollee are far less common than in Dutch and other continental heraldry.
The reverse bears the remnants of an old label.
The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1., at p. 279.
