Chinese Export Armorial Plate - Philips

Chinese Export Armorial Plate - Philips

Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1760.

Dimensions: Approximately 8⅞” in diameter.

The edge gilded.

The rim is decorated with floral swags.

The cavetto is decorated with a chain design.

The center is decorated with the Philips family coat of arms and motto. Note that the arms bear the mark of a son, in this case referred to as a “label”.

The reverse is undecorated.

The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1., at p. 613.

Howard believes that the arms are probably those of the Philips family of Yarpole, Hertfordshire, whose arms were granted in 1579.
