Chinese Export Armorial Plate - Wheler

Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1755.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 9¼” in diameter.
 

Decoration:

The plate is decorated with both underglaze and overglaze blue decoration. The overglaze enameling gives the central flowers a 3-dimensional effect.

 

The rim is decorated with a crest and branches flowing from the central decoration.

 

The center is decorated with peonies and a ling zhi mushroom, which is a symbol for long life.

 

The reverse is undecorated.

 

The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1., at p. 590. According to Howard, the service was likely made for Edward Wheler, a member of the Supreme Council of the East India Company at Calcutta.

 

Condition: Minor inpainting to the center peonies where would have been wear from use and there is a glaze chip in the reverse of the rim ; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
