Chinese Export Armorial Tea Pot – Rae

Chinese export porcelain cylindrical tea pot, circa 1790.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 6” high (including lid) and 5½ in diameter (excluding spout and handles).

 

Decoration:

The body is decorated with a blue red and gilt band at the opening.

 

The lid is decorated with a similar band and a gilt berry knop.

 

The body bears the arms of the Scottish family Rae with the motto “In Omnia Promptus”.

 

There is a gilt and blue band at the base of the body.

 

The strap handles are decorated with a gilt design and are joined at the body with blue and gilt berries.

 

The base of the body is unmarked.

 

The service discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1., at p.855.

 

Condition: Losses to gilding on spout and knop; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
