Chinese Export Bowl for the Islamic Market
Chinese export porcelain bowl, circa 1800.
Dimensions: Approximately 13” diameter.
Decoration:
The rim is edged in gold.
There is a band of overglaze blue and gold flowers edged with gold on the interior and exterior borders of the bowl as well as at the base of the bowl.
The center of the interior is decorated with a similar circular band.
The body is decorated with swirling bands of the same design.
The base is unmarked.
The absence of figural decoration and restrained floral pattern indicates that this bowl was intended for either the Mughal India or the Middle East market. A discussion of Chinese export porcelain intended for the Islamic market can be found in Chapters XIV and XV of Nadler, “China to Order”.
Condition Minor rubbing to gilding and enamels, manufacturing glaze pops and minor kiln discoloration on the interior; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
