Chinese Export Danish Market Armorial Plate - Classen

$1,500.00Price

Chinese export porcelain armorial plate c. 1775.

Dimensions: Approximately 9½

Decoration:

The border is decorated with a gilt band containing the words “Til Erindring af Det Danske Asiatiske Compagnie den XXl October MDCCLXXIV" (“For the Remembrance of the Danish Asiatic Company on XXl October MDCCLXXIV”).

Within this gilt band is a pink band and a band of green laurel leaves.

In the center is a medallion picturing J.F. Saly's equestrian statue of King Frederik V of Denmark, framed by a laurel wreath in brown and gold.

The service was ordered by the executive board of the Danish Asiatic Company to industrialist and Major General Johan Frederik Classen in gratitude for covering the expenses of the railing around the monument at Amalienborg, completed on October 21, 1774, the same day as Crown Prince Frederik's wedding.

The Danish Asiatic Company was established in 1730 to revive Danish trade in the Danish East Indies and China following the closure of the Danish East India Company. It was granted a 40-year monopoly on Danish trade on Asia in 1732 and taken over by the Danish government in 1772.

Pieces from the service are illustrated and discussed in Bredo L. Grandjean’s “Dansk Ostindisk Porcelaen”, 1965, pp. 57 - 61; fig. 73 - 75.

A Danish service made for Queen Juliana Maria with the same central medallion is illustrated and discussed in “Chinese Export Porcelain in the Reeves Center Collection” by Thomas V. Litzenberg, Jr. at page 119, Pl. 107, which refers to this service.
