Chinese Export Dutch Market Armorial Plate – Udemans

Chinese export porcelain plate, circa 1775.
 
Dimensions: Approximately 9⅛” in diameter.
 
Decoration: 
The rim is decorated with a green dogtooth band and floral swags.
 
The cavetto is decorated with gold chain band. 
 
The center is decorated with the arms of Willem Udemans Jr.
 
The reverse is unmarked.
 
The service is illustrated and discussed in Kroes, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market”, at pp. 383-4.
 
Kroes notes that the armorial is unusual in that the helmet and crest are included within the oval surrounding the oval shield, indicating that the Chinese artists were unfamiliar with European heraldry.
 
The Udemans family was from Zeeland and many members were employed by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC). Willem Jr. joined the Company at the age of 14 sailing as an ordinary seaman. He left it’s employ as the Captain of the East Indiamen Huis Om and Zeeuw.
