Chinese Export Grisaille Armorial Plate - Poole
Chinese export armorial plate c. 1785.
Dimensions: 6 ⅛” diameter.
Decoration:
The rim is decorated with grisaille and gilt flower festoons.
The cavetto is decorated with a grisaille and gilt chain.
The center contains a central armorial with motto: “Pollet Virtus”.
The service is illustrated and discussed in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 1 at p. 359.
The service was made for Sir Ferdinand Poole, 4th Baronet, who died without a male heir. The Baronetcy was created in 1677.
In “Chinese Armorial Porcelain”, Vol. 2, at p. 75, Howard concludes that of the 3,325 armorial services illustrated in the two volumes, only 72 are decorated in en grisaille and gold. Furthermore, of those 72, only 10 such services were from the 1780’s, as is this service.
