Chinese Export Orange Nanking Basket and Undertray
Chinese export porcelain basket and undertray, c. 1800.
Dimensions:
Basket: Approximately 9½” x 7⅝” x 3½ (without regard to handles).
Tray: Approximately 10¼” x 9”.
Decoration:
The border of each is decorated with a shaded trellis diaper band with spearheads and dumbbells.
The cavetto of the tray is decorated with a shaded trellis diaper band with three cartouches.
The body of the basket and the center of the tray are decorated with a relatively detailed scene including pavilions and other buildings, a lake or river, bridge with a figure, a boat, and trees.
The base of the tray and basket are unmarked.
Orange decoration for a Nanking design is rare. Orange decoration is more often found on Fitzhugh pieces, but even there it is less common than underglaze blue.
