Chinese Export Pseudo-Tobacco Leaf Tea Caddy circa 1770 with later copper and silver mounted lid

Chinese Export Pseudo-Tobacco Leaf Tea Caddy

$1,000.00Price

Chinese export porcelain tea caddy, circa 1770 with later copper and silver top.

Dimensions: Approximately 5¼” x 3¼” x 1⅝”.

Decoration:
The term “Pseudo-Tobacco Leaf” refers to overall patterns that are very close to what is commonly referred to as “Tobacco Leaf”, with the smaller flowers, rosettes, rings and other elements of the Tobacco Leaf design covering the surface. However, in Pseudo-Tobacco Leaf patterns the large leaves are absent.

In this example, the body is decorated with leaves of turquoise, yellow, pink and gold and branches upon which are playful rats.

The base is unmarked.

The copper lid is embellished with sterling silver overlays copying elements of the pseudo-tobacco leaf design.

This version of the pattern is categorized as Pattern C4 by Pierre Debomy, in “Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo” at p. 214.

Condition: Glaze fleabite on one shoulder; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
