"Fair Mount" - Transferware Plate

Staffordshire transfer plate manufactured by Joseph Stubbs as part of his “Spread Eagle Border” series., circa 1825.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 10” diameter.

 

Decoration:

The border is a floral and diaper design with three eagles.

 

The central scene is a view of the dam and water works at Fair Mount, in Philadelphia. This is the second water works of Philadelphia and shows the then new Schuylkill buildings and the dam.

 

The reverse bears the printed mark “Fair Mount near Philadelphia”.

 

The source is a painting by Thomas Birch 1821.
