Chinese export covered cider jug, circa 1790 - 1810
 

Lid is edged in a gilt and blue saw-tooth border and is decorated in gilt swags with vines and stars.

 

The lid is topped by berry form knop.

 

The upper edge of the body has the same border patterns as the lid.

 

The sides once contained circular inscriptions which are now rubbed.

 

There is an ornately intertwined handle attached to the body with gilded leaves.

 

The base has a molded edge and a simple gilt line.

 

The base is unmarked.
 

An example of this style of border is illustrated at p. 71 of Schiffer “China for America”.

Flea bite to edge of spout, rubbed gilding, otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 10” tall (including lid).
