18th C. Chinese Export Famille Rose Armorial Platter – Marten
Chinese export porcelain famille rose armorial platter, circa 1750.
Dimensions: Approximately 17” x 14”.
Decoration:
The border is decorated with the arms of Marten impaling Bidwell, the Marten crest of a martin, and two cartouches with enameled scenes.
There is a large central scene of birds among flowering plants.
The reverse is unmarked.
George Marten of Oxfordshire married Deborah Bidwell in 1750. Her father Hugh was a senior merchant in the East India Company and may have ordered this service for his daughter’s marriage.

Condition: Wear to enamels; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.
