“Rhine” Staffordshire Transferware Platter

“Rhine” Staffordshire Transferware Platter

Staffordshire transferware platter printed in grey, circa 1880.

Dimensions: Approximately 19” x 15½”.

The border is decorated with scrolls and floral swags.

The cavetto has a border of simpler scrolls.

The center scene involves a castle with a bridge over the eponymous river, and boats with their boatmen.

The reverse has a printed cartouche with the pattern name “Rhine” and two impressed makes. One appears to be the number 6 over the number 30. The other appears to be the number 16.

There are at least a dozen versions of this scene, but this version is unusual in that the boat in the foreground is pulled ashore rather than moving along in the water as it is usually pictured.
