Pair 19th C. Chinese Export Canton Plates with Decorative Borders

Chinese export blue and white octagonal shaped Canton plates. 19th Century.

Dimensions: Each approximately 9” diameter.

The rim has a shaded trellis spearhead and dumbbell pattern border interspersed with fish roe panels that is surrounded by a fish roe style band.

The central scene is surrounded by a curlicue band and consists of pavilions, trees, a lake, and a bridge with two figures.

This is a very decorative pair because of the octagonal shape and the unusually decorated

Condition: Minor glaze flaws, otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.

For a discussion of Canton scenes and borders see Madsen & White, “Chinese Export Porcelains” (2009), and Forbes, “Hills and Streams: Landscape Decoration on Chinese Export Blue and White Porcelain” (1982).
