Pair of Chinese Export American Market Armorial Plates - Van Schaick Plates
A pair of famille rose plates with a crest and monogram, c. 1804.
Decoration:The edges have an unusual gilt feather design interlinked with bows or knots.
On the rim there is a crest consisting of a winged arrow above a gilt monogram “G.W.V.S.” that is surrounded by crossed stems of leaves.
The cavetto is bordered in a gilt ribbon with interspersed floral sprays.
The center has a floral bouquet tied with a ribbon and three floral sprays.
An example from this service is illustrates in Howard, “Chinese Armorial Porcelain” Vo. 2 at p. 509.
Howard believes that the service was made for Gerrit Wessels Van Schaick., a friend of John Jacob Astor.
