Pair of Chinese Export Brown Fitzhugh Plates

Pair of Chinese Export Brown Fitzhugh Plates #2

$1,950.00Price

Brown Fitzhugh pattern Chinese export porcelain plates, circa 1820.

Dimensions: Approximately 9½”.

Decoration:

The rim is edged in gold and is decorated with a butterfly and diaper pattern.

The cavetto is decorated with a diaper band.

The center is decorated with four sprays of chrysanthemums and peonies surrounding a central chrysanthemum.

The reverse is undecorated.

Jean McClure Mudge, in her books “Chinese Export China for the American Trade” and “Chinese Export Porcelain in North America”, writes that services made for the American market typically are decorated in colors other than blue, including brown, and the center of the design is something other than the qilin or kylin found on most blue and white services. She notes that brown is one of the rarer variations.

Here the color is brown, and center of the design is a chrysanthemum, making it likely that this service was made for the American Market.

Condition: Minor wear, kiln grit on the reverse; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
