"The Dam and Water Works Philadelphia" Staffordshire Transferware Plate
Staffordshire transferware plate by Henshall & Co. (Henshall, Williamson & Co.), circa 1825.
Dimensions: Approximately 10” diameter.
The border is decorated with a pattern of fruits and flowers.
The central scene is of a side wheel early steamboat on the Schuylkill River before the Philadelphia waterworks dam. To the left of the dam, is the canal lock by-passing the dam.
The reverse bears the name “The Dam and Water Works Philadelphia” within a printed cartouche.
The image is based upon the 1824 print “View of the Dam and Water Works at Fair Mount, Philadelphia” by Thomas Birch.
A second version of this pattern features a stern wheel steamboat instead of the side wheeler.
