“Upper Ferry Bridge Over the Schuylkill River” Transferware Plate

Dimensions: Approximately 8⅞” diameter.
 
Decoration:
The border is decorated with a pattern of flowers and scrolls interspersed with American eagles.
 
The central scene is of a covered bridge over the Schuylkill River. In the background are buildings and in the foreground are a boat on the river, a wagon, a carriage, a rider, and other figures. 
 
The reverse bears the printed mark “Upper Ferry Bridge Over the Schuylkill River” and an impressed “STUBBS”.
 
The Upper Ferry Bridge was designed by architect Robert Mills and constructed by Thomas Wernwag. It was erected in 1813. 
 
With a span of 340 feet, it was the largest covered bridge in the United States at the time. It also used an innovative construction technique using iron bars.
 
The bridge, located at what is now Spring Garden Street, burned in 1838. 
 
The building to the left of the bridge is the Harding Tavern.
