19th C. Historical Staffordshire Transferware Plate – “Boston Atheneum”

Staffordshire transferware plate manufactured by John & William Ridgway as part of their “Beauties of America” series, circa 1830.
 
Dimensions: Approximately 6¼” diameter.
 
Decoration: 
The border is a repeated flower pattern.
 
The central scene is of the Athanaeum building, as it is properly spelled, on Pearl Street in Boston.
 
The reverse bears a printed mark, “Beauties of America, Atheneum Boston, J&W Ridgway”.
 
In 1806 a group of men in Boston planned a public reading room with valuable books for reference. In 1807 it was incorporated, acquiring its name. This view represents its third home on Pearl Street between 1822-1849.
 
The source of the design is an 1829 drawing by Abel Bowen.
