Late Edo Period Large Polychrome Charger – Pine Trees and Horses
Japanese porcelain charger, c. 1850.
Dimensions: Approximately 18½” diameter.
Decoration:
The charger is decorated with multiple decorative bands surrounding a central roundel.
The outer band is a diaper pattern with interrupted by three cartouches of karakusa scroll.
Within this is a gilt band containing flowers, clouds, and two large cartouches of pine trees.
Below is a band featuring prancing horses, waves, and waterwheels.
Next there is a band of geometric patterns and karakusa scrolls.
The central roundel is bordered with a diaper band and is decorated with what may be flowers on stems.
The reverse is decorated with a design of auspicious objects. There are three blue circles surrounding the foot.
The base bears five kiln spurs within a blue circle.
